5 winter activities you can do

The winter season provides a lot of opportunities for fun activities, whether you live in an urban center or a rural region.  Popular sports during colder months include hockey, La cross and skiing.  These are excellent activities for spectators and sports enthusiasts alike, whether you're a beginner, a sports enthusiast or an athlete.  Trying a new sport or pastime is a great way to get outdoors and make the most of a brisk, cold wintry day.  The following activities are all excellent ways to get yourself active during the colder months of the year:

  1. Ice skating is an excellent way to socialize and work on your balance.  Many cities and towns offer free or low-cost access to skating rinks, either in public places or community centers. Learning to ice skate requires balance, which can be achieved through practice.  Once you’ve mastered the rink, you might want to try hockey or La cross, both popular games during the winter.
  2. Tobogganing, also known as sledding, is an exciting way to make use of a hill or incline at a nearby park or field.  All you need is a sled and a few friends, then head to the nearest hill and enjoy the ride! Some ski resorts offer tubing, a more extreme and fun way to enjoy sliding down a snow-covered mountain.
  3. Skiing is a good workout that can offer a quick thrill (down-hill skiing) or cross-country skiing, where you can explore nature and wildlife as you trek through a snowy forest or park.  You don’t have to be experienced to begin, and once you get used to the technique, it only gets easier and more enjoyable.
  4. Snow shoeing is a great way to burn a few calories and explore areas deeply covered in snow. These shoes cover a wider area, which keeps you from sinking into the snow, giving you a great advantage for trekking in many places you might avoid in the winter. It’s a great activity to practice in the countryside, though many city parks offer accessible trails in the winter, which provide an opportunity for beginner and advancer snow shoeing alike.
  5. Hiking may seem like a more summer or spring-friendly activity, though it’s a great way to explore the outdoors in the winter as well.  The air is crisp and clear, and the landscape provides a unique view unlike warmer months, with frozen lakes or ponds, and snow-covered trees and bushes.  Some people engage in other activities along with hiking, such as building a snow fort or structure for fun. Making snowballs and playing tag in the woods is not just for kids; adults and families can enjoy this activity too.

After trying a new winter activity, a nice warm cup of cocoa or hot apple cider is a nice treat to look forward to.  The colder season may seem like a time to hibernate indoors, though it is much more fun to bundle up, head outdoors and get the most out of the fresh air and fun that awaits.
